STEVE WAUGH TELLS ILLAWARRA MEN TO ‘CHECK IT’

ABOUT CHECK IT
Healthier Illawarra Men (HIM), with support from the Illawarra Division of General Practice (IDGP), and partnership from ahm Health Insurance, is organising a free men’s health screening event, called, CHECK IT’ at the WIN Entertainment Centre (WEC) on Friday, 20 August 2010, during Men’s Health Week.

Illawarra men of all ages are invited to come to the WEC on 20 August between 12 noon and 6pm, where they will be able to undertake a variety of screenings, blood tests and other assessments for conditions such as hypertension, obesity, diabetes, cholesterol and seek advice and information on depression, anxiety, stress, alcohol and drug dependency and so on.

Check It will be staffed by health professionals, assisted by medical, nursing and health and behavioural science students from the University of Wollongong. Part of the day will include guest speakers (Wayne Gardner, Dragons, Hawks, Susie Burrell etc) to talk on their experiences. Additionally, a Men’s Health Expo will be on display for all the men in attendance.

A free men’s health screening event, Check It, was launched by ahm brand ambassador and former Australian cricket captain, Steve Waugh. Waugh sent a clear message that men’s health should be as important to all men as it is to him.

“I’m really excited by this initiative” said Steve Waugh, “what a great way to get men involved, to take responsibility for their health and hopefully make a change. My health has always been so important to me through my sporting career and it’s something I just can’t afford to take for granted. As a member of ahm and their brand ambassador, I’m proud to be associated with Check It and can hopefully help to influence some healthy and positive change in local men!”

Healthier Illawarra Men (HIM) was recently formed to address the issue of men’s health and includes business and community leaders, leading Illawarra medical practitioners and University representatives.

According to HIM Chair Mark McDonald, Australian men are notoriously reluctant to be pro-active about their own health – sometimes with fatal consequences. “We are determined to do something to change this, and help men in our community take more responsibility for their health.”

Mrs Glenice McMahon spoke at the launch about the experience of losing her husband Alan McMahon, “This is a great initiative and I am passionately committed to getting men to check their health regularly,” said Mrs McMahon.

“I know firsthand what it is to go through losing a husband who ignored the signs. My children have missed out on having their father in their life. I hope that if only one man attends Check It on 20 August and starts to think about his health then we have made a step in the right direction. Stress and ignoring your health is a killer, don’t let the big wakeup call be the last one you hear” said Mrs McMahon.

This event is proudly supported by local health insurer, ahm. Head of Marketing, Annie McDonald, said that ahm had a long history of helping its members to think more about their health and supporting them to make a positive change. “We were delighted to back this event, knowing the impact it will have in our community and also knowing just how important even a small positive change can be to men’s health.”
