Nan Tien TempleConstruction of the temple began in 1992 with the temple officially opened in October 1995. Costing over $50 million dollars to build, the temple is one of the branch temples of Fo Kuaung Shan, which has over 120 branches worldwide. "Nan Tien" in Chinese means "Paradise of the South". This is the largest Buddhist Temple in the Southern Hemisphere. Mount KemblaMount Kembla retains the atmosphere of a 19th century mining village with old mining cottages and historic buildings. Mount KeiraOfficially opened in 1959, Mount Keira covers some 10 hectares and is 457 metres above sea level. The mountain offers great panoramic views of the Illawarra area. Botanic GardensThis land was originally owned by the Hoskins family, founders of the Steelworks, who built an Elizabeth Mansion on the grounds known as Glennifer Brae. In 1954, Mrs Hoskins made a gift to Wollongong City Council of nearly 11 acres to be used as a Botanic Garden.
Minnamurra RainforestA visit to Minnamurra Rainforest is a rare opportunity to view this rare remnant of rainforest which once extended along the Illawarra coastal escarpment. Minnamurra Rainforest is particularly special because of the diversity of rainforest types, the range of ferns and wildlife that exists within a relatively small area. The flora consists of a mixture of subtropical and temperate rainforests, which provides a habitat for more than two thirds of all ferns found in New South Wales. Minnamurra Rainforest offers a 1.6 kilometre elevated rainforest walk and a 2.6 kilometre walk to Minnamurra Falls. |
